The small spaces between seconds

When was the last time I said “I love you”?
An hour?
A minute?
A second?
In fact, I wish
I could fill all those seconds
and even the small spaces between those seconds
with a soft, whispered
“I love you.”
I wish I could whisper
“I love you”
to you all through the night
as you quietly sleep.
I wish you could hear me think
when I am far away
so that I could say
“I love you”
no matter the miles between us.
I wish you could feel
each beat of my heart
and know that each beat
silently, constantly,
follows the rhythm of the words
“I love you.”
I wish that each time you listened to the wind
sing among the trees
you would hear,
almost beyond the hearing,
the soft sound of my voice saying
“I love you.”
I wish that whenever you are sad,
or alone,
or scared,
you will hear my voice:
“I love you.”
When was the last time I said “I love you”?
An hour?
A minute?
A second?

I wish could fill
all those seconds
with “I love you,”

and even the small spaces between those seconds…
